Quality You Can Trust: Our Appliance Grading Explained

Transparency and reliability in every refurbished appliance.

Buying a refurbished or "graded" appliance is a smart way to get high-end technology at a fraction of the retail price.

Here at Renew 2 U, we believe that choosing a refurbished unit shouldn't mean sacrificing peace of mind. That is why we operate with total transparency regarding our testing processes and cosmetic standards.

Sources

The vast majority of our stock comes from the manufacturers or large retailers, either the appliances have been damaged in transit from their place of manufacture to the UK, sometimes it's an overstock in which case the appliances are essentially brand-new.

Sometimes the appliances have been returned to the manufacturer or retailer from a customer for one reason or another which leads us on to one of the most common questions we're asked:

Is the appliance I'm considering buying used?

The short answer to this is an appliance could have possibly been in someone's home for up to 30 days prior to being returned to the retailer, the reason for the return could be that the original customer changed their mind, it didn't quite fit in their kitchen, or it didn't have the feature they thought it had, or that there was a genuine fault with the appliance.

We never really told the history of any unit that arrives here at Renew 2 U, which is why our testing procedures are so important as we need to cover all possibilities before we can release an appliance to the quality team and support it with a 12 month warranty.

Functionality First: "As New" Performance

Before we even consider the aesthetics of an appliance, we ensure it performs exactly as a new unit would. Every appliance that enters our facility undergoes a rigorous multi-stage testing procedure:

  • Initial Inspection: All units are visually inspected for damage that could impact functionality, if the appliance is determined to be beyond economic repair (BER) it will be stripped of parts for use and the remains fully recycled so the materials can continue on.
  • Electrical Safety: We conduct resistance and continuity tests, alongside a detailed inspection of the power plug and external wiring.

Operational Testing

  • Laundry: Tumble dryers complete full cycles with heavy-duty towels to ensure internal components like motors and heat exchangers are in perfect working order. If you receive an appliance that requires water and you find a little water still in your machine, this is likely why.
  • Refrigeration: Every fridge freezer is run continuously for a minimum of 72 hours with frequent temperature monitoring to guarantee consistent cooling, if they pass this then features such as water dispensers or ice makers are tested.
  • Genuine Parts: If an appliance requires a replacement part to meet our standards, we use only original manufacturer (OEM) components.

Cleaning and Grading

Once an appliance has made it through testing it reaches our quality assurance team who will clean if necessary, and then grade the appliance based on its cosmetic grade as explained below.

Our Grading System: Choosing the Right Fit for You

Once an appliance is confirmed to be fully functional, it is cleaned, photographed and then graded based entirely on its cosmetic condition - an appliance graded as being a C Grade is functionally identical to one being a Grade A.

This allows you to choose the level of savings that matches your needs.

Grade Cosmetic Description Ideal For...
Grade A Near-perfect condition. These units are as close to "as new" as possible with no visible cosmetic damage, often with their original packaging. Buyers wanting a pristine, showroom look.
Grade B May have minor cosmetic marks, but never on the forward or upward-facing surfaces. Damage is restricted to side or rear panels. Integrated appliances or units where the sides are hidden by cabinetry.
Grade C Our lowest grade, featuring visible cosmetic marks like scuffs or dents on any surface, including the front. Maximum savings in utility rooms or where aesthetics are less of a priority.

Guaranteed Peace of Mind

We understand that reliability is your top priority. That is why all appliances, regardless of their cosmetic grade, are sold in full working order.

To back up our promise of "as new" functionality, every purchase comes with a comprehensive warranty. If a unit does not meet our strict functional standards during testing, it is recycled rather than sold, ensuring that only the best-performing machines make it to your home.
